In this world, rivers of Kouki flow and ebb like the tides. Where they come close to the surface life and mushi thrive, where they are not , life and mushi die off. The Kouki are rivers of mushi, the purest form of life on earth. In essence, it is life and should never be touched. Those who do, become part of the dark that dwells within the deepest shadows, Tokoyami.
Only certain people can see Mushi, and those that set off and study them are called Mushi Masters; Or Mushi-shi. All mushi masters contain a mushi that gives them their ability to see the mushi. Hundreds of years ago, a mushi master contained a Tokoyami. He was named after the mushi that kept the Tokoyami in check. His name....was Ginko. The eyeless fish that lives in the Tokoyami.
But like all, mushi contain good and bad, controlled by the Kouki. There are two entities that live within the Kouki. They are called Yami, and Hikari. Cliche but it means Dark and Light.
Sometimes, humans can become mushi too, when Yami and Hikari need someone protected, they turn that person's loved one into a mushi to watch over them forever, then they are welcomed into the Kouki to rest until their loved one is reborn.
----
Hikari sighed and watched as her favorite mushi master passed away. Ginko had lived to be 78, very old. Yami looked at his sister and rolled his eyes, watching as kouki spilled from her eyes like tears. He sighed and patted her on the back.
"Sister, cry not. There are other Muishi Masters that need us as well." Hikari watched as Ginko became the mushi that ate the Tokoyami, just as his name implied. She sniffled.
"At least...he didn't become Tokoyami, like his Okaa-san; Nui." Yami nodded and hugged his sister, after all...only he could go see the Tokoyami and only she could visit the Ginko.
